How to convert Chinese text to Jyutping

  1. Paste Chinese characters and select “Convert to Jyutping”. The tool matches words first, then looks up individual characters.
  2. Check the dropdowns for words with more than one pronunciation. Choose the reading that fits your context.
  3. Copy the characters and Jyutping, or play the available syllable recordings.

What do the numbers mean?

Jyutping uses a number from 1 to 6 after each syllable to mark its tone. For example, 食飯 is sik6 faan6, meaning to eat or have a meal. The numbers are tone labels, not a count of syllables or an emphasis score.

Try “I'd like something to eat” to see Jyutping used in a sentence.

Does this translate English or Mandarin into Cantonese?

The converter adds Cantonese readings to your original characters. It keeps the wording you entered, so written Mandarin does not automatically become natural spoken Cantonese. English, numbers and punctuation stay unchanged. For a phrase you want to say, use the English-to-Cantonese phrase collection.

Can I listen to the result?

Yes. “Play selected syllables” follows your selected Jyutping readings using recorded syllables. Missing recordings are reported. This is separate-syllable playback, not natural sentence speech. The optional device voice depends on your system and may use different readings.

Does it support simplified Chinese?

Both simplified and traditional Chinese are accepted. Your original text is preserved. Context-sensitive names, place names and specialised terms may need a separate check. See data and audio sources.
