How to use Cantonese Corner

Have Chinese text? Look up its pronunciation

Paste up to 300 characters into the Jyutping converter. It matches words first, then individual characters. It keeps punctuation, English and numbers unchanged. If there is more than one reading, choose the one that suits your context.

Know what you want to say in English?

Search the everyday phrase collection for a meaning such as “bill please” or “good morning”. You can also browse greetings, food, travel and family situations. Each phrase has Cantonese characters, Jyutping and English notes. Search only returns expressions in the collection; it does not translate arbitrary sentences.

Listen and copy

“Play syllables” plays the recorded sounds in the displayed Jyutping. It helps with individual sounds, but is not a natural sentence recording. If a sound is missing, the page reports it rather than substituting another tone. “Copy phrase” copies the English, Cantonese and Jyutping together.

The pronunciation tool also offers a device voice when your browser has a Cantonese voice available. Its readings may differ from the selected Jyutping. Your operating system may use an online voice service.

English and Chinese editions

The English edition has a selected collection of phrases. Use the language switch to open the corresponding Chinese page, where available. The Chinese edition has a larger phrase collection, a dictionary, saved items and additional tools.

Content and feedback

Examples follow everyday Hong Kong Cantonese. English explanations are AI-assisted and have not received a separate human language review. See sources and content scope. If you find a problem, keep the phrase and its context so the site maintainer can check it.
