Do I need to know Mandarin?

No. The English phrase collection includes Cantonese characters, Jyutping and English explanations. You can start with a phrase you need, even if you cannot read Chinese. The pronunciation lookup above takes Chinese text, which you can paste from something you are reading.

What can I hear?

The lookup plays individual recorded syllables in sequence. They help you check sounds, but do not model the rhythm of a natural sentence. Full-sentence recordings are not yet available. Read more about our content and audio sources.
