Know where the words and sounds come from

Sources & content scope

Pronunciation data, phrase explanations and audio have different sources and review histories.

Pronunciation data: words.hk

The character list, word list and frequency data come from the words.hk data page. Those specific files are marked as public domain. The current lookup contains 61,579 entries. It does not reproduce the full dictionary’s definitions, example sentences or recordings.

Lookup matches words first and then individual characters. Alternative pronunciations are preserved, rather than automatically chosen by meaning. Names, specialised terms and regional usage may need a separate check. The data is a fixed snapshot, not a live request to words.hk.

English meanings and usage notes

The English edition contains 40 selected expressions based on the site’s existing Hong Kong Cantonese collection. The original Cantonese expressions have recorded human review information on their Chinese pages. Their English meanings, usage notes and search aliases were prepared with AI assistance and have not received a separate human language review. The original review record does not certify the English translation.

English content was updated on 2026-10-01. Each translation records its source so changes to the original text can be checked against it. These are independently written explanations, not copied dictionary definitions. Regional and conversational context still matters.

Syllable recordings: Jyut.net

Recordings come from 粵音資料集叢 — Jyut.net Cantonese syllables, credited to 粵音資料集叢 and licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0. The converted recordings supplied here use the same licence. The upstream speaker is a man from Hong Kong.

Selected Opus files were converted to mono 24 kHz, 48 kbps MP3 with container metadata removed. They were not trimmed, joined or volume-adjusted, and have not received an independent listening review here. Upstream revision: 4f4204b03a3694cb4451ffeda064bc1e6c71629f.

Syllables, sentence recordings and device voices

Syllables play one after another, following the displayed Jyutping. They do not capture natural sentence rhythm, connected speech or intonation. Missing sounds are reported. Natural full-sentence example recordings are not yet available.

The optional device voice depends on your operating system, may use an online service and can choose different readings from the ones shown. Microphone practice in the Chinese edition is only available for expressions that have their own example recording.
